| Picture this: you sitting around reading some famous work and, in all of its majesty, it makes reference to some obscure animal, vegetable, or inanimate object. "What in the world is THAT!?" you ask yourself, but the answer is not close at hand. Being the inquisitive type, though, you hustle over to your local library and bust out... <gasp> ...the encyclopedias! Well, thanks to our digital age and my unparalleled skill in web development (have I mentioned yet how modest I am?) this site is able to offer you links from various pages which might reference things foreign to you to your very own Pete-Specefic Encyclopedia... or Encyclo-pete-ia. Lots of the links that you find in the Journal, Soap Box, and Survey Answers are generated by this site "on-the-fly" to links to topics in the Encyclo-pete-ia where I'll explain things from my perspective. And if you think this is a neat idea, you should REALLY check out everything2... which does the same thing on a much larger scale. (And people besides me get to write definitions) |

| Description: |
It's an interesting concept, really, though some will certainly think me insane for it.
Every one of a person's thoughts, actions, beliefs, and behaviors, are the product of a many faceted personality. Even those who we think to be terribly one-dimensional almost invariably have more going on "behind the scenes" than we'd guess.
Sometimes we're torn between two (or more) choices, sometimes it seems like we're 99% behind (or against) something, and sometimes we're just not sure what to think. To adequately describe, to other people, my thought various thoughts and personality facets I've come up with a little metaphor to help: The Board of Directors.
Think about it this way: consider the breakdown of your personality: 10% sarcastic, 3% diplomatic, 1% hopeless romantic, 13% logician, etc... it's an interesting exercise, and I'm not sure that it can ever really be "finished" as we are all continually growing and changing.
Nevertheless, what I have done is essentially "factored" each of those little facets into their very own Pete. Each of those Petes has a seat (if it starts to sound any more like Dr. Seuss, please shoot me) on the board (There are, of course, other positions). This board (which meets in a conference room that looks oddly like the inside of my head which would imply, of course, that my head is hollow... more on that later) and they are responsible for all of my thoughts and actions.
Some of the more important players on this little team are the following:
The Pete-Censor - this little guy is wholly responsible for what makes it to the outside world in the form of communication. While very important to the success and survival of Pete, he tends to be the first one to fall asleep or be affected by alcoholic beverages.
Sarcastic-Pete - He is probably the ranking member of the board. He is in the good graces of the censor most of the time and tends to have his hand in all the workings of the board.
Cynical-Pete - If you've ever noticed that I have a propensity to be a pain in the ass, and quite difficult to deal with (especially for optimists) this guy is to blame. He and Sarcastic-Pete work closely on many projects.
Sentimental-Pete - Sentimental-Pete spends most of his time bound and gagged, left to fend for himself in the board room closet. Occasionally he mananges to escape and put his two cents worth in. He has been known to be a very successful member of the board, but only when Sarcastic-Pete and Cynical-Pete let him speak.
Optimistic-Pete - While not bound and gagged like other members of the board, Optimistic-Pete has been forced into a shy and submissive state. He tends to voice his opinions quietly. Optimistic-Pete does, however, do a good job of keeping Pessimistic-Pete in line as it can be said that I am a fairly realistic realist.
Computer-Nerd-Pete - While Computer-Nerd-Pete doesn't influence many decisions, he handles much of the input, connecting most all situations with something computer-related. It's amazing what analogies can be drawn from everyday objects and events...
Competitive-Pete - Certainly the biggest motivator on the Board. Competitive-Pete works to keep me fighting and struggling toward my goals. When he and Sarcastic-Pete get together with Athletic-Pete, things can go awry should I find myself in a confrontation.
There are many, many more members of the board... maybe some day I'll get around to describing more of them. |
